Glenn Hall Park Volunteer Day

This Saturday, August 23, volunteers are needed from 9am-12noon to help keep Glenn Hall Park looking neat and tidy. Tasks will include pruning hedges, weeding and planting flowerbeds. While some equipment will be available, volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gloves, hat, clippers, rakes, etc. Coffee and snacks will also be available. 

While RSVPs are preferred, drop-in help will not be turned away. For more information, email cadence@surewest.net.

East Sac's Pops in the Park 2014 Weekend #2

This coming Saturday, the second Pops in the Park concert will be held at Glenn Hall Park in River Park. Starting at 6pm, The Count will be playing their unique blend of rock and R&B. The emcees for the evening are KCRA's Edie Lambert and former assemblyman (and Lambert's husband) Lloyd Levine. 

Bring your own food, or you can find plenty of delicious refreshments from Burr's Fountain, Formoli's Bistro and the East Sac-Midtown Kiwanis Club. (A portion of the proceeds from food and beverage sales will help to support neighborhood improvements.)

Glenn Hall Park Volunteer Day

From 9am-12noon this Saturday, March 15, volunteers are needed to help tidy up Glenn Hall Park. Projects will include pruning, weeding, planting the flowerbeds and otherwise getting the park ready for spring. Some tools will be provided, but if you have your own, that's great. You are also encouraged to bring you own gloves and a hat. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

While drop-in help is certainly appreciated, R.S.V.P.s are preferred. If you are interested in participating or have other questions, send an email to cadence@surewest.net. The only thing that could potentially delay the volunteer day is heavy rain.

Screen on the Green

This Saturday, August 10, Glenn Hall Park will host the screening of the 1996 live action version of "101 Dalmations," starring Glenn Close, Jeff Daniels and Joely Richardson (and just over a hundred spotted dogs).

The movie starts at sundown, around 8:15pm. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and your favorite movie snacks and settle in for a fun, kid-friendly evening. Complimentary water is available, and other drinks and snacks will be available for purchase, courtesy of the River Park Mothers' Club.

Susan B. Anthony Women's 5K Walk/Run

"The BEST little women's race in California!"

For the 37th year, the Susan B. Anthony 5K gives women runners the chance to compete just with other women. It's considered a good run for both competitive runners seeking a fast and accurate 5K, as well as beginners looking for a nice and easy first race.

The marathon was established in 1976 by The Buffalo Chips running club. While it has certainly grown since then, it remains a pleasant, hassle-free event with no more than 600 runners. And it now includes the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Kids 1/2 miler, one of the few free kids' runs in the area.

The race starts and finishes at Glenn Hall Park, and comes complete with pre-race entertainment and post-race refreshments. The course is mostly shaded, winding through the River Park neighborhood.

On Saturday August 10^th the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Kids 1/2 Miler begins at 8am, and then the Susan B. Anthony Run/Walk begins at 8:30am. (Registration opens at 6:30am.) For more information and to register online, go to www.buffalochips.com/sba5k/.

4th of July River Park Firecracker Parade and Festival

After the Buffalo Chips 4th of July 5-Miler, stick around Glenn Hall Park for more 4th of July fun. At 10am is the River Park 4th of July Firecracker Parade and Festival. The parade starts at the Caleb Greenwood sign at the corner of Carlson and Camelia and will head straight down Carlson to Glenn Hall Park.

After the parade until 1pm, there will be carnival games and prizes (provided by Arts in River Park), art for sale and antique cars on display, as well as balloon artists, bounce houses, imagination stations and face painting for the kids. There will also be live music by Phil Serna and his band, Unsupervised. While there's no cost for general admission, attendees can buy tickets for the carnival rides and refreshments from vendors like Jamba Juice, The Wienery and Leatherby's.

37th Annual 4th of July 5-Miler

Some Americans celebrate their freedom by waving the flag. Others go to parades. This 4th of July, why not start your celebrating with a run?

The 37th Annual 4th of July 5-Miler is the area's longest running (pun intended) running event. There's no cost to enter. Sign-in begins at 7:15am at Glenn Hall Park. The Kids' Half-Mile starts at 7:45, while the 5-Mile Race begins at 8am.

The run is organized by the Buffalo Chips Running Club, the largest and oldest of its kind in Sacramento. For more info on the run, check out the Buffalo Chips website at http://www.buffalochips.com/358-2/.

Pops in the Park

If you didn’t get your fill of live music with the Sacramento Music Festival, never fear. All this June, we have Pops in the Park. Starting out in 1991 as an afternoon concert, the East Sac Pops in the Park has since evolved into a series of evening concerts to help fund the upkeep of neighborhood parks.

This year, it kicks off June 1 in East Portal Park with perennial Sacramento Music Festival favorites Tom Rigney and Flambeau. Rigney and his gang of talented musicians always gets the audience up on their feet with their energetic Cajun and zydeco tunes, traditional New Orleans jazz, waltzes, blues and ballads. The emcees for the evening are B Street Theatre’s Buck Busfield and Bill Blake.

The series continues through June in various East Sacramento parks. Here’s the schedule:

June 1- Tom Rigney and Flambeau, East Portal Park

June 8- Mercy Me, Glenn Hall Park

June 15- The John Skinner Band, Bertha Henschel Park

June 22- Mick Martin & The Blues Rockers, McKinley Park

All shows start at 6pm. Get there early with your blankets or lawn chairs to get the best spots. The shows are free, with proceeds from food and drink vendors benefitting neighborhood projects.

Glenn Hall Park Volunteer Day

One of East Sac's beloved parks--GlennHall Park--needs a little TLC to keep looking its gorgeous self this summer. From 9am to noon on May 18, volunteers are needed for some light landscaping: pruning hedges and planting flowerbeds.

The only things requested that you bring are your own garden gloves, a hat and a water bottle. Garden tools, coffee and other refreshments will be on hand. Coffee and donuts for just a few hours work out in the fresh air? Sounds pretty good to me.

Pops in the Park Lineup!

The bands for East Sac’s 2012 Pops in the Park summer concerts have been announced!

Mercy Me! will kick it off on June 2^nd with their rhythm and blues in McKinely Park

The Chris Gardner Band will be playing Country music at Glenn Hall Park on June 9^th.

My favorite, the Q-Balls will perform rock-n-roll classics from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s in East Portal Park on June 16^th.

Ivan Najera and Friends will finish it off with Latin Jazz in Bertha Henschel Park on June 23^rd.
