Water Saving Seminar

While we did manage to get some rain a bit late in the season, we’re still not quite where we need to be to escape drought status. This coming Saturday, April 26, a water conservation rep from the City of Sacramento Department of Utilities will be on hand at McKinley Library to give their tips on conserving water this summer indoors and out (and keeping your plants alive at the same time). 

The talk will be from 12noon-1pm, and all are welcome to attend and bring their water-saving questions. For more information, go to www.saclibrary.org/Locations/McKinley.

Celebrate Girls at the Library

In honor of Women's History Month, the Friends of McKinley Library are sponsoring a program at the library designed to encourage girls to be curious, confident and make a difference. It is called Girls Like You! and will be held at McKinley Library this Saturday, March 8, starting at 2:30pm.

All school-age girls are invited to attend the talk (conducted by Leslie Stair from Artsy Mommas) and learn more about a couple of curious and brave girls who were able to make a difference at early ages. The talk will be followed by art activities inspired by these girls. For more information, call (916) 264-2920.

Fun at McKinley Library

Looking for something to do this Saturday? Then come on by the McKinley Library for one or both of their public events. The first, at 1pm, is when the SFSquared book discussion group will meet. Any and all sci-fi and/or fantasy book lovers are welcome to attend.

And at 2:30, magician Forrest Barnes will show off his skills and offer a history lesson at the same time. He will share stories about how African-American inventors improved our lives, and will demonstrate magic and illusions to illustrate those inventions.

Valentine's Craft Class

As long as they come from the heart, the best Valentine's gifts don't necessarily have to cost a lot. This Tuesday, February 11, at 5pm, come by McKinley Library to learn how to make creative and thoughtful Valentine's gifts using simple and affordable household items and other materials.

Animals in the Library

On Saturday, January 25, animals are taking over the McKinley Library. Well, not really, but starting at 2:30pm, there will plenty of live animals on hand, with all classes represented--invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals. The purpose of the program is to teach children about these animals and their contributions to the world.

The event is free, and all school-age children are encouraged to attend. After all, this is a great opportunity for them to see animals from all over the world in person instead of just online or on TV. For more information, call (916) 264-2920 or go to saclibrary.org.

McKinley Library Holiday Party

The Friends of McKinley Library will be holding its annual holiday party this coming Saturday, December 7, from 10:30am to 12:30pm. A holiday performance of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" by the Puppet Art Theater Company will be followed by cocoa, cookies and an appearance by Santa himself.

Ice Cream and Robots

This Tuesday, August 13, the Friends of McKinley Library will hold its annual free ice cream social. Along with frozen treats from Burr's Fountain, drum and ukulele duo Musical Robot will entertain the kids with their blend of songs, storytelling and puppetry. There will also be outdoor games, crafts and face painting.

Festivities will run from 6pm to 7:30 at McKinley Park. Organizers encourage families to make an evening of it and bring a picnic dinner to enjoy along with the free ice cream. For more information, call (916) 264-2920.

McKinley Library Zombie Survival

OK, this is just too much fun so I have to share. The McKinley Library is hosting a Zombie Survival fitness class on Sat, October 6 from 11:00-12:00  

According to their website:

“We all know the zombie apocalypse is coming. The question is, are you fit enough to survive?

This workout will help you get in shape to duck, dodge, or kick some undead butt! Wear loose comfortable clothes (theme dressing strongly encouraged) and bring a bottle of water, you’ll need it! Taught by Lipstick Librarian of the Sac City Rollers.

Prize awarded for the best costume.”
