McKinley Park Tree Tour

This Thursday, September 11, come on by McKinley Park for what will be the Sacramento Tree Foundation's last park tree tour of the season. From 6-7:30pm, attendees will be guided through the park by a certified arborist. You can commune with nature tech-free, or bring along a tablet or smartphone to learn how to use the GreenprintMaps app to identify trees.

Visitors will congregate in the Shepard Garden and Arts Center parking lot wearing comfortable walking shoes and their own water as needed. For more information, go to www.sactree.com or call (916) 974-4333.

Mulch Madness

This coming Monday, September 8, is the last Mulch Madness of the season at McKinley Park. So if you haven't had a chance to help out yet, now is the time. It's very satisfying to clean up around McKinley's many trees and protect their roots from, keeps weeds down and retain moisture. Plus you get to meet with your neighbors and enjoy the lush park setting.

Volunteers will meet up at 6pm near the Shepard Garden and Arts Center and--with their own tools, wheelbarrows and gloves, or supplies already on hand--will spread mulch rings until about 8pm. Photographing Jewelry and Small Artworks Lecture

Anyone who sells things online and wants their products to stand out, or who is in the visual arts and trying to get their portfolio to stand out, will benefit from the Photographing Jewelry and Small Artworks Lecture that will be held at the Shepard Garden and Arts Center this Monday, August 18, from 1-2:30pm. 

Artist and photographer Charr Crail will discuss lighting, set-up, backdrops, equipment, necessary file formats for online presentation and how to devise your signature look. This lecture is presented by the Sacramento Center for the Textile Arts (SCTA). Admission for non-SCTA members is $10, while members get in free.

McKinley Park Tree Tour

The next free Sacramento Tree Foundation tour of McKinley Park's numerous trees will take place this Tuesday, August 12, from 6:30-8pm. Attendees will meet up at the Shepard Garden and Arts Center parking lot. From there, a certified arborist will lead the tour through the park.

Anyone attending is encouraged to come ready with comfortable shoes, water if the weather's hot and, for the technologically inclined, a smartphone or tablet to learn how to use the tree mapping app GreenprintMaps. For more information and to sign up for the tour, go to www.sactree.com.

Tree Tour of McKinley Park

If you missed the McKinley Park tree tour in June, do not despair. Another tour is being held this coming Tuesday evening, July 1. Attendees will congregate in the Shepard Garden and Arts Center parking lot at 6:30pm. Then for the next hour and-a-half, a certified arborist will lead a tour through the park.

Apart from comfortable shoes--and water if it's hot out--nothing else is required to attend. Taste of East Sacramento

Right after Pops in the Park ends, it’s time to start thinking about next year. The Taste of East Sac event is just the thing to get the ball rolling. On Sunday June 29th, from 5-7pm at the Shepard Garden and Arts Center in McKinley Park (at 34th Street) the 6th Annual Taste of East Sacramento will show off the best food, drink and entertainment the area has to offer.

Presented by the East Sacramento Chamber of Commerce and Selland's Market, the event will include offerings from more than 15 area restaurants, wineries and food purveyors, including 33rd Street Bistro, Dos Coyotes and Hoppy Brewing Company. There will also be art on display and live music by The Brian Dougherty Trio.

Tickets for the event are $30 in advance. There are a limited number, and every year that have sold out quickly. They can be purchased at Selland's Market-Cafe, or call (916) 452-8011 or email eastsacchamber@aol.com. 

I went last year and had a great time. I've already bought my tickets for this year and plan on seeing a lot of my East Sac clients there!

McKinley Park Tree Tours

This coming Thursday, head on over to the Shepard Garden and Arts Center parking lot to meet up with a certified arborist and learn more about the trees in McKinley Park. The tour runs from 6:30 to 8pm. The technologically savvy are encouraged to bring their tablets or smart phones to learn about electronic tree mapping, using the GreenprintMaps app (a very cool app for looking up trees in McKinley Park and all over the city). 

I did a Tree Tour last year and loved it. Very informative and while I only remember a small percentage of the great information that was shared that day, it still surprises me on how often I can pull up good tidbits about our local tress.

East Sacramento Farmers Market

Now you don’t have to go so far for your fresh fruit and veggies. This Saturday, May 17, marks the debut of the East Sacramento Farmers Market at McKinley Park. Starting then, it will be held every Saturday morning next to the Shepard Garden and Arts Center.

Sacramento Rose Society Show

This weekend, April 26-27, stop and smell the roses at the annual Sacramento Rose Society show at Shepard Garden and Arts Center. It will run from 1-5pm on Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday. Both days, more than 100 different kinds of roses and arrangements will be on display. And Master Gardeners and other rosarians will be on hand to answer any of your own rose-cultivating questions.

Capital City African Violet Society Show & Sale

This coming weekend, April 5 and 6, the Capital City African Violet Society (CCAVS) will their annual African violet show and plant sale at Shepard Garden and Arts Center. More than 1000 plants, including hard-to-find varieties, will be available for sale, as well as handmade self-watering ceramic pots. Free potting will also be available with purchase.

Spring Plant Sale

This Saturday, March 29, the Sacramento Perennial Plant Club will host its annual plant sale from 9am-3pm at Shepard Garden and Arts Center. They will be offering all of their favorite and most unusual plants for sale, as well as second hand gardening books. In addition to the plants for sale, there will be a raffle. And farmer, teacher and soil scientist Bob Cantisano will provide a lecture on organic gardening at noon.

Plant and Craft Sale

This weekend, all of the various horticultural clubs that meet at Shepard Garden and Arts Center, as well as a number of arts and crafts vendors will be on hand to sell their wares. In addition to browsing all the plants and crafts for sale, attendees will also get to enjoy great food and music.

Sacramento Weavers & Spinners Guild Open House

This coming weekend, come on by the Shepard Garden and Arts Center to check out all the warm and cuddly goodies available at the Sacramento Weavers' and Spinners' Guild's annual open house. Perfect time to get a warm blanket to snuggle under in this wonderfully wet weather. 

In addition to there being pieces for sale, this event is a great opportunity to learn more about the crafts of weaving and spinning. See demonstrations, check out equipment and materials, and even try your hand at spinning or weaving (with the guidance of a Guild member, of course).

John Marshall

If your resolution this year is to learn new things, come by the Shepard Garden and Arts Center this Tuesday, January 28 through Sunday February 2nd and find out about the intriguing and extensive art and history of dying textiles, and perhaps even get inspired to try your own hand at this ancient, beautiful craft.

Acclaimed fiber artist John Marshall, who specializes in the traditional Japanese techniques of katazome (stencil drawing) and tsutsugaki (cone drawing), will be presenting "Pigments Throughout the Ages", "Down and Dirty, Working with Natural Dye" and "Clothing Design Workshop". Each presentation goes from 10am to noon or 10am to 4:00 depending on the presentation. After the Pigments presentation from noon till 4pm, you can buy silk yarns or finished wraps at a trunk show and talk with Marshall directly to get any of your questions answered.

This special event is being organized by the Sacramento Weavers' and Spinners' Guild. Admission to the presentation varies. For more information, go to www.sacweavespin.org.

Northern California Art by Fire Seconds Sale

Looking for a unique piece of local art to buy at a great price? Then come to the Shepard Garden and Arts Center this Saturday, January 11, to find many pieces of handmade and wheel-thrown pottery available for sale.

Held by Northern California Art by Fire (NOCA), the "Seconds Sale" has been a popular annual show ever since it began in 1987. The show helps NOCA members sell their beautiful, but perhaps less than perfect pieces at what they call "amazingly reduced prices." Fall Art and Plant Sale

This coming weekend, the Shepard Garden and Arts Center in McKinley Park will hold its fall plant and art sale. A certified arborist will walk you through the park, helping you to identify trees visually as well as with an app called GreenprintMaps (if you so choose; electronic devices are not required to enjoy the tour).

Participants will meet up at the Shepard Garden and Arts Center parking lot at 6pm, with the tour running until about 7:30. Tree Tours in McKinley Park

We all admire the trees in and around McKinley Park, and now here's your opportunity to learn more about them. Starting July 2, the Sacramento Tree Foundation will be offering a series of tree tours of McKinley Park. This tour will begin near the Shepard Garden and Arts Center parking lot, and will be led by a certified arborist. The tour will run from 6:30-8pm.

According to the Sac Tree Foundation's website, participants are encouraged to bring a tablet or smartphone and will be shown how to identify trees, edit data and a lot more using GreenprintMaps. Digital technology is not required, however, to enjoy the trees and the tour.

In order to make the most of the tour, it is recommended that you wear comfortable shoes and bring along a water bottle if the weather is warm (which we know it will be).

Taste of East Sac

This Sunday, June 30, Taste of East Sac returns to the Shepard Garden and Arts Center near McKinley Park. Now in its fifth year, Taste of East Sac showcases all the best that area restaurants, wineries and breweries have to offer. The food and wine on hand will be plentiful and delicious, and the cause worthwhile. This event supports Pops in the Park, which just recently wrapped up its 2013 season.

This year's theme is "In the Good Old Summertime." From 5-7pm, you can enjoy the summertime vibe along with the abovementioned refreshments, art and music.
